Is there a pattern?
IN DEPTH ~ for those wishing to dig deeper into the mystery full notes on the churches & their relationship to each other and related features are set out below:

[You are recommended to read these notes with reference to the 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey Landranger Map 198 - Brighton & The Downs).]

General:

Equi-distances and angular patterns are within a tolerance inconceivable by co-incidence.

Most of the shapes, particularly the isosceles triangles with apexes at Ashurst and Henfield, are “mirrored ” i.e. they can be folded over each other.

Some of the intermediates, particularly Woodmancote and Newtimber would have been dismissed had they not been in such proximity to the “overall scheme”.

Pyecombe is suspect and at this stage its inclusion can only be justified on the hypothesis that originally there was an earlier and very nearby site.

Of the remaining four, Steyning acts as an intermediate described in “b” of “Other Features” below. Only three, St Botolphs,Bramber and Buncton appear, so far, to make no contribution whatsoever.

Other Features:

Directed at Sele:

a. The straight parish boundary between the parishes of Sompting and Lancing, which arises near the likely lowest bridging point of the Teville Stream, when projected, arrives at Sele after passing through Lancing Clump.

b. A line drawn from Chanctonbury summit through St Andrews, Steyning finishes at Sele.

c. A projection of the line of the Roman Road from Pulborough is also sighted on Sele.

Not directed at Sele:

A four church alignment to Devils Dyke – Sullington, Washington, Wiston, Edburton
